ABOUT

Hi, I’m Barb Mowery. My studio is in my Lusby, MD, home that I share with my husband, two daughters, and dog. I’m mainly a painter working in acrylics. But my practice is full of playful experimentation, so you might catch me working with a paintbrush taped on the end of a pole or racing against a kitchen timer. In the studio I am made of questions. My curiosity is boundless.
I’ve been painting since high school, but the intensity and focus really kicked in after my first child was born. I spent a decade painting the landscape outdoors, and that experience was an incubator for me. It forced me to work quickly, solve problems, and act decisively. And it provided community.
I use water-based mediums: acrylic, gouache, and Flasche paint. I make collages using hand-painted paper (palette leftovers) and photocopies, but I think of them as paintings made with dry paint. I make monotypes with slow-drying acrylics and then paint into them, which, again, I think of as paintings. I work on Bristol and mixed-media paper, which allows me to take risks and prevents me from being too precious about the work. My most recent body of work blends aspects of space science, magical thinking, and resilience.
