Artists in Action 2021

In April 2021, I painted outdoors at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Solomons, Maryland, as part of the Artists in Action residency program. I spent the week talking with visitors and experimenting with Flashe (vinyl) paint and with making paintings on the ground.

Artists in Action 2019

In February 2019, I set up my studio in the Main Gallery at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Solomons, Maryland, as part of the Artists in Action residency program.

I spent the week talking with visitors and using my daytime source photos to create nighttime paintings. In cinema it’s a technique called “day for night”—some filmmakers shoot their night scenes at dawn or dusk and change the exposure to simulate night.

Text from the video:

“Going in for my last day of my residency at Annmarie Garden. You can see the building behind me, the Arts Center. I’m going into the Main Gallery. Hoping to get some good work done this morning before I have to pack everything up. This has been a fantastic experience.”

“I spent a week working in a very public studio space in the main gallery.  There is a movie-making technique called day-for-night. Sometimes filmmakers shoot night scenes at dawn or dusk and then change the exposure to simulate night. Just over 100 years ago, American artist Frederic Remington used this technique to create a series of nocturne paintings. Remington observed the outdoors at night extensively, but he painted in the studio, transposing daytime paintings, photos, and sketches into dramatic night scenes. I looked closely at Remington’s night paintings and made my own studies. I invited Annmarie visitors to imagine how colors shift at night and then to create their own nocturnes color-by-number style.  I also tried out Remington’s technique by using my own daytime source photos to create nighttime paintings.  And Annmarie visitors discovered that when a painting is going well, sometimes I do a little dance.”
